The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public university located in Cape Town, South Africa. It was established in 1829 as the South African College and was granted university status in 1918 - making UCT one of the two oldest universities in South Africa.

Stellenbosch University (SU) is situated in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This university obtained full university status in 1918, on the same day as UCT – making it one of the two oldest universities in South Africa.

University of Pretoria

The university of Pretoria was established in 1908 – as the Pretoria branch of the Transvaal University College. It was the fourth South African institution to be granted university status and is a multi-campus public university. The Faculty of Veterinary Science at UP, established in 1920, is the second oldest veterinary school in Africa and the only veterinary school in South Africa.

The University of the Witwatersrand is a multi-campus institution. This university is more commonly known as Wits University and is situated in Johannesburg, South Africa. The university was founded in 1896 in Kimberley as the South African School of Mines and is the third oldest university in South Africa.

DUT is a multi-campus university in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. This university of technology was established in 2002 as the result of a merge between Technikon Natal and ML Sultan Technikon.  The institution was initially named the Durban Institute of Technology and later became the Durban University of Technology.

Comprehensive or Combined Universities are the result of amalgamation of some former Technikons with certain traditional Universities. This university is one of the largest residential universities in South Africa.

The Nelson Mandela University is a multi-campus South African university in Gqeberha and George. The university was founded in 2005 after the merge of various institutions but the roots can be traced back to the Port Elizabeth Art School of 1882.
